Event Recap and Key Takeaways
Using the principle: “How I lift myself and others today, will determine our potential tomorrow” - Jetha Devapura. We discussed how effective empowerment is not about giving answers, but about helping others discover their own capability through listening, questioning, support, and ownership.
Ways to Empower by Listening - Building the Puzzle
The art of empowering is to build the village around the person to enable them to ‘do it themselves’. It’s like solving the puzzle with them, rather than for them.
Doing it themselves does not necessarily mean doing it alone but rather being in charge to hold the power. The village can consist of many aspects that will specifically help the person to reach their destination and most importantly to let them know that they are not alone.
The village not only consist of other people and external resources to help them, but also internal resources like strengths they already have and not aware of.
The skill of the mentor is to listen by asking questions to uncover the pieces of the puzzle that builds the village around the person.
A key reflection to carry forward:
The importance of listening and asking purposeful questions to help others build belief in themselves and confidently say: “I can do it.”
