QLD & NSW Autumn Newsletter

Now that we have put Australia's second-warmest summer on record behind us, it's time to channel the flannel and enjoy the cooler days of Autumn.

As always we have brought in the new year full steam ahead with two new Edge intakes kicking off and various thought provoking CIWG's being held throughout QLD and NSW.

With no signs of slowing down we have a great range of upcoming events to keep you  thinking and to encourage engagement. There is something for everyone; LOTO - Electrical & Mechanical, Good Warehousing Practices, Constraint Management, Tackling SLOBS and many more. 

Notable highlights for this quarter in QLD & NSW
We ran 18 events which 337 people attended and was represented by 84 different companies.

QLD OERt CIWG | HOP in Safety 
Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) is sometimes described as a cross between system design and psychology. It is a global movement towards using the social sciences to better understand how to design resilient systems.
 
Humans fail (make errors and break rules) with a known frequency that is affected by known influencing factors. If we take those data inputs as a given, we design better systems – including better rules, and better methods of discipline.
 
In early February we were treated to the experience of CHEP using HOP in the area of Safety, with an excellent presentation and site tour provided by Peter Smith, Group Production Leader for Rocklea and the QLD sites.

CHEP demonstrated the effectiveness of HOP in Safety and some of the successes and challenges on their 18 month journey so far.

This inspired positive debate on how other business and industries are approaching their HOP journey, emphasising the importance of diversity in discussion.
 
A big thank you to Peter, Lee and CHEP for hosting another successful SIRF event with great networking and knowledge exchange that I am sure will lead to safer workplaces within our membership base.
 
 

QLD IMRt CIWG | Rotating Equipment – CM & Maintenance

One of the goals of a Common Interest Workgroup (CIWG) is to gather diverse views from across industry and learn from shared experience. In mid-February 2020 we were treated to an excellent workshop on the topic of Condition Monitoring and Maintenance of Rotating Equipment at Stanwell Corporation.

The impressive presentation by Jacob Williams from Stanwell’s Tarong Power Station showcased the latest in maintenance performance management, equipment and innovation for the benefit of a wide group of attendees at different stages in their maintenance journey.

This triggered lively debate on topics including the use of Power BI, Thermography and Drones through to optimal structure of support teams and ‘opportunity’ maintenance.
 
The conversations continued throughout the breaks where networking took over from the topic and new business relationships developed. It was great to see so many interested members attend this event and be inspired by such an experienced and progressive business such as Stanwell.
 

NSW OERt CIWG | Mental Health in the Workplace

 We had a large group of HR and Safety professionals attend which required us to host this event at a function centre in Eastern Creek but we were also able to conduct a site tour of Arnott's Huntingwood manufacturing facility at the conclusion of the event for 16 of the attendees.

Formal presentations from steel manufacturer BlueScope, pharmaceutical company Glaxo Smith Kline, glass manufacturer O-I Glass and biscuit manufacturer Arnott's provided great insights on their journeys, lessons learned and information on the external providers that they engage.

It was interesting to feel the passion in the room for the topic, the different stages of the journey that organisations are on, and the consensus that employers have a responsibility to tackle this topic for the health and well-being of the workforce which ultimately provides many benefits back to the employer.

Comments like the below meant we achieved our goals of providing new knowledge and opportunities to connect with peers in other businesses for our attendees.
